Tips on how to maintain your lacrosse sticks

How to Maintain Your Lacrosse Stick

Proper maintenance of your lacrosse stick ensures durability, consistent performance, and better gameplay. Below are essential steps to keep your lacrosse stick in top condition.

1. Cleaning the Head and Mesh

Regular cleaning prevents dirt buildup and maintains optimal performance.

After Every Game or Practice:

  • Remove dirt and debris from the head using a damp cloth or toothbrush.
  • Avoid using excessive water, as it can weaken the mesh over time.
  • If the mesh is muddy, rinse it lightly with water and let it air dry.

Deep Cleaning (Monthly):

  • Fill a bucket with warm water and mild soap.
  • Soak the head and use a soft brush to remove dirt.
  • Rinse with clean water and let it dry completely.

2. Maintaining the Pocket and Stringing

The pocket affects your control, passing, and shooting accuracy.

Check Pocket Depth:

  • Make sure the pocket is not too deep or too shallow, as per league regulations.
  • Test by placing a ball in the pocket—if it sits too low, tighten the strings.

Adjust Shooting Strings:

  • Tighten or loosen the shooting strings to fine-tune your throwing release.
  • Replace frayed or worn-out strings to maintain consistent ball control.

Break in New Mesh:

  • If you get a new mesh, soften it by repeatedly passing and shooting.
  • Use a ball and screwdriver technique: Push a ball into the pocket overnight using a screwdriver to hold it in place.

3. Caring for the Shaft

The shaft needs regular inspection to prevent breakage and maintain grip.

Inspect for Dents and Bends:

  • If using a metal shaft, check for dents and cracks after games.
  • Replace a damaged shaft immediately to avoid breakage during play.

Maintain Grip:

  • If your shaft has a grip coating that wears down, consider using grip tape for better control.
  • Clean sticky residue with rubbing alcohol and a cloth.

Avoid Excessive Force:

  • Don’t slam your stick against the ground or goalposts, as this weakens the shaft.

4. Protecting Your Stick in Different Weather Conditions

Rain & Wet Conditions:

  • Dry your stick after playing in wet conditions to prevent mesh shrinkage.
  • Store it in a dry place—avoid leaving it in a damp bag.

Cold Weather:

  • Avoid leaving your stick in freezing temperatures, as extreme cold can make the shaft brittle and prone to breaking.
  • Warm up the stick with light hand pressure before playing in cold weather.

Hot Weather:

  • Don’t leave your stick in direct sunlight or inside a hot car, as this can warp plastic heads and weaken mesh.

5. Storing Your Lacrosse Stick Properly

  • Hang it Vertically:Keeps the head in shape and prevents warping.
  • Avoid Heavy Pressure:Don’t place heavy objects on your stick.
  • Use a Stick Bag:Protects your stick from dirt, weather, and accidental damage.

6. Regularly Check for Rule Compliance

  • Measure Stick Length:Ensure your stick meets league standards.
  • Inspect Pocket Depth:Officials may check before games to ensure legality.

By maintaining your lacrosse stick regularly, you’ll extend its lifespan and ensure consistent, high-level performance on the field. Would you like recommendations for specific maintenance tools or replacement parts?
